Standard VIII:

Assessment for Learning

The teacher understands, uses, and interprets formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and advance student performance and to determine teaching effectiveness.

Assessment of student work is a very important part for all educators. However, I feel that one must take a student’s personality, grade level, and work ethic into account in order to procure an accurate assessment for their work. I’ve included a transcript of three 1st graders reading/telling me the aspects of a picture book story. This was a really interesting assignment because it allowed me to see how younger children go about learning language, as well as the differences that exist from one child to the next. This is really important for educators because without that background, it is impossible for teachers to assess their students fairly and consistently as they advance and explore other possibilities in their learning.

I also included a case study I compiled of a fifth grader at Lincoln Elementary for Practicum in Reading. This assignment allowed me firsthand experience with the assessments I would be working with as a reading specialists, as well as how to correctly proctor and score the tests. This assignment shows my ability to track the progress of students as they receive intervention for reading. I worked with SRAs, easyCBM assessments and AIMSweb assessments in order to gather my data. This experience was very fulfilling and displays my abilities to work with material that I may be unfamiliar with. It has also helped me to understand how assessments work within a school district, and how the data is analyzed.
