Standard I:

Knowledge of Subject Matter

The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline taught and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students.

Since my main focus in education will be devoted to literature, English, and language arts, I thought it would be appropriate to include my senior capstone thesis in standard one. This paper was definitely one of the hardest assignments I have completed. Specifically because it was an almost completely independent experience; I was given the opportunity to choose my topic, and text(s) that I would prefer to work with, and engage with the research in an educated and academic manner. I feel that I was able to accomplish this within this particular paper. This assignment shows my ability to tackle literary theories in a cohesive manner in order to articulate my point to others. It also shows my responsibility as an academic, since we had smaller assignments focused on the progress of the paper.

The second paper I included is from my senior year as well. The class was a four-week course, focused in postmodern literature. During that same time period, I was also taking another three-credit class with this one. I think this essay shows my ability to understand and tackle different forms of literature, even if I am not fully versed with the material. This also shows my ability to multitask and complete the work expected of me in a professional manner, while still exploring the different components of the literature I was analyzing.
