Standard IX:

Professional Commitment and Responsibility

The teacher is a reflective practitioner who demonstrates a commitment to professional standards and is continuously engaged in purposeful mastery of the art and science of teaching.

Within standard nine, I have also included my essay and some artifacts from a case study I compiled while observing eighth graders at Middleton Middle School. I feel that this assignment shows my ability to work within a classroom in a professional manner, while still gaining the trust of my students in order to create a safe learning environment. This was one of my favorite assignments, and it really helped to convince me of my desire to teach. It was a wonderful learning experience, and I think my ability to connect with students on a personal, and professional manner can be seen through the work I put into this particular case study.

I also decided to include some slides from the New Member Education program I taught within my sorority, Gamma Phi Beta. This program includes creating PowerPoint presentations concerning the standards and history of Gamma Phi Beta. New Member Educator was my position during Spring/Fall 2011. I learned a lot from this experience, and while it was not as imperative or as demanding as a literal teaching job would be, it gave me a lot of experience in translating (somewhat) boring information into interesting aspects of the chapter. By engaging in a form of teaching outside of an actual classroom, I think I have gained more practice for my future experiences within a formal learning environment.
